Psychic fails to predict Grand National result?

Dean.jpgENGLAND. Did Dean ‘Midas’ Maynard’s psychic abilities beat the bookies or were his predictive talents only half as good as his skill in getting publicity? Judge for yourself.

Sceptics will say his attempt to name the winner of the 2008 Grand National horse race, four days before the famous annual event took place at Aintree, Liverpool, on Saturday 5 April, failed. He believed Bewleys Berry would be first past the post.

But others will argue that he didn’t fail because he named Comply Or Die – the actual winner – as one of the four horses that would perform well.

The bookies’ favourite at the time Maynard made his predictions was Simon (which was also in the psychic’s top four), and that horse didn’t feature among the winners, either, so they both got it wrong.

Dean Maynard had offered to put his reputation on the line in a challenge against the Grand National website, which successfully tipped the winners of the 2005 and 2006 races.

A £100 charity bet was been placed on both selections, with any winnings being donated to Sport Relief.

Dean felt Bewleys Berry would do well last year “which he did, until he fell”. So that’s a failure, then. This year it was in the lead up until the second fence from home, then faded fast.

330_Bewleys_Berry_592013.jpgAs well as Bewleys Berry (right) and Simon, the psychic named McKelvey (last year’s runner-up) and Comply or Die as the best performers in this year’s Grand National.

The experts at www.grandnational.org.uk, on the other hand, advised punters to put their money on Simon, Slim Pickings, Snowy Morning or Turko.

Snowy Morning came third and Slim Pickings finished fourth.

Neither the psychic nor the experts named King Johns Castle, the 20-1 outsider, who finished in second place, just four lengths behind the winner.

So Dean Maynard named the winner in his top four, but got the other three wrong. The bookies failed to name the winner, but named two of the first four horses across the line.

It will be interesting to see how the bookies judge that result! A photo finish, perhaps?
