Dowser strikes lucky

AUSTRALIA. Using two copper-coated steel rods, Tasmanian publican Peter Benson went in search of a legendary underground river whose existence had been the subject of speculation among Marrawah farmers for two centuries.

What he uncovered with this unconventional means was beyond all expectations, according to Tasmania’s “The Examiner” (26 March). He discovered a river that is said to be 30 metres wide and runs for many kilometres from near Dismal Swamp to the sea, in the north-west tip of Tasmania.

It is now producing around five million litres of fresh water a day from a bore hole drilled 40 metres down into the earth.
