ITALY. For three years, no one knew the fate of 30-year-old Chiara Bariffi. Police were baffled by her disappearance in late 2002. Murder was one possibility, but as she had also suffered from emotional problems, suicide was another. There was even a rumour that she had left the country for Spain.

With no hope on the horizon, her parents decided to consult a psychic. They sent a photograph of their daughter to Maria Rosa Busi.

“When I saw the photo, I knew she was dead,” the psychic revealed later. She said that Chiara had died, in her car, in Lake Como. Apparently, on the night she disappeared there was a flood, landslide and problems on the road which may have been a factor in the tragedy. She even pinpointed where her body would be found having received a message from the dead woman.

She told Reuters: “I went to the lake and I saw where it happened … I heard her, I saw her and I drew a map. Nobody thought she was in the lake.”

Sceptics have dismissed the value of her involvement. Massimo Polidioro, head of Italy’s Committee for the Control of Paranormal Affirmations, said: “That Chiara ended up in Lake Como, and not in Venice or who knows where, was already known; it was in fact the most likely hypothesis.”

So it was not a known fact – it was just a hypothesis. Had it been known positively then the police would have searched the lake.

Other sceptics, according to the Reuters report, believe the psychic came up with the answer by doing some research on the Internet. But they didn’t explain how – brilliant though it is – the Internet knew what had happened to Chiara Bariffi whereas no one else did.

It was left to a rescue worker, Remo Bonetti, to put the sceptical observations into perspective. He had led similar searches for bodies in the past and said that the missing woman would not have been found with Busi’s help.

He told Il Messaggero newspaper:” Without the directions of Maria Rosa no one would have ever been able to find her, unless by accident.”
