China gets $20m UFO research base

CHINA. It is more than 11 years since the Balyun District of Guiyang, capital of China’s Guizhou Province, experienced a strange “visitation”.

Nothing was actually seen but various strange events that occurred on 30 November 1994 are now being attributed to UFOs. For example, 27 hectares of pines in a forest farm mysteriously fell down but nearby plastic shelters remained intact.

And at an adjacent truck factory, steel pipes were curiously broken, a huge truck was found 20 metres from where it had been parked and a night shift worker claimed to have been lifted into the air by an unknown force.

There are two schools of thought. An alien visitation is the obvious explanation in the minds of many of the city’s population. But scientists who visited the site reckoned thunder, lightning and tornadoes were the probably cause.

Those explanations have not convinced an unnamed Taiwanese company, however. In December 2005, the Guiyang authorities announced that they had received 160 million yuan (US$ 20 million) from the company to construct a UFO research base.

What the base will do was not revealed but Wang Fangchen, a biologist who investigated the incidents soon after they occurred, has described the project as “ridiculous”. He wonders where they will find scientists to do the research, but adds: “I won’t oppose it if they just want to promote local tourism through the programme.”

The events on the night in questions are certainly puzzling. But even more puzzling is why a Taiwanese company is donating so much money to UFO research. Without being conspiratorial, it seems there’s more to this story than anyone’s saying.
