Loch Ness Monster wins by a nose

lochnessie.jpgSCOTLAND. They could have chosen Robert Burns, Sean Connery or Robert the Bruce as Scotland’s most famous figure. But it is the Loch Ness Monster  – whose very existence is doubted by many – who has come out on top in a survey of 2,000 adults across the UK.

They were asked to vote for Scotland’s best-known son or daughter, yet a staggering 29% named the mythical beast. The survey was commissioned by Crabbies Green Ginger Wine.

RobertBurns.jpgNessie, as the elusive beast is affectionately known, came out 2% ahead of Robert Burns (right), poet and lyricist whose poems and songs, particularly Auld Lang Syne, are famous around the world. Burns’ Night suppers have been held in his honour for the past 200 years.

Actor Sean Connery was a long way behind them with 12% of the vote, followed by freedom fighters Robert the Bruce with 9% and William Wallace with 7.5%. Two other Scottish actors, Robbie Coltrane (6%) and Ewan McGregor (2%), also featured, as did comedian Billy Connolly (4%).

Only two females made it into the top 10: TV presenter Lorraine Kelly (2.5%) and pop singer Lulu (1%).

Nessie was unavailable for comment, as was Gordon Brown, Britain’s Scottish-born Chancellor of the Exchequer and possible successor to Tony Blair as prime minister, who didn’t figure in the list.
