Nobel Prize winning scientist on psi
Apr 28, 2012
Why, despite what many regard as an abundance of evidence, does Science – and most scientists – refuse to acknowledge the existence of psychic phenomena (
psi
)? The simple answer seems to be that, so far, no one has produced a theory that encompasses the complex phenomena that are usually bundled under the "psi" label. Without a satisfactory unifying theory and faced with paranormal claims that appear to throw existing scientific principles out of the window, it's perhaps hardly surprising that psi does not have more supporters within the scientific community. Today's Society for Psychical Research Study Day in London invited a handful of the exceptions – some of the best scientific brains...

Priest returns as son of woman he loved?
Jan 1, 2011
Imagine browsing through a friend's library of books on psychical research and coming across a volume whose cover featured a voluptuous female, cloaked in purple, with one shoulder tantalisingly exposed and a hand resting lightly on a pregnant bulge. One's reaction might well be that this is a Mills & Boon romantic novel that belongs in a different collection and to slip it quickly back on the shelf. Even a surreptitious delve between its covers would do little to dispel that initial conclusion. We should not judge a book by its cover, of course, but in the case of
Reborn For Love
, which tells the story of an unusual case of apparent reincarnation in Brazil ...

Researcher David Fontana departs for next world
Oct 21, 2010
I love travelling and whenever I go to a new place I always take a guidebook with me. They are invaluable. But is there one for the next world? Well, yes - and its author is probably making good use of the knowledge he crammed into its pages. Because David Fontana, a past president of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) and a noted psychologist who wrote the splendid
Life Beyond Death: what should we expect?
has just passed on. He died yesterday having been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer just a couple of weeks ago. I am told by friends that he was "peaceful" during his last days in this world - a result, I'm sure, of his meditation practices (he wrote several books on different meditative techniques) and also his belief that, at death, we all pass to another dimension of existence...

Hot debate over cold fusion
Jul 19, 2010
Misguided scepticism by some scientists was put under the microscope by author Richard Milton (right) in a presentation to the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) in London (13 July, 2010). His update on what he describes as "the forbidden science" included homeopathy, iridology, remote viewing, synchronicity and cold fusion. Though there appears to be nothing paranormal about the last of these subjects - which if harnessed could one day provide the world with abundant energy - many scientists have reacted to claims about it in the same way that they dismiss the evidence for paranormal phenomena like ESP, telepathy and psychokinesis. Because they don't believe it is possible, they refuse to examine or accept the evidence...
