See no reason why a "past life memory" could not be the concoction of a dream or nightmare, assembled from parts of movies seen or books read in the past, even just created just as an author would write a book. I've sometimes had memories of events of which I'm not sure whether they actually occurred (and in which I "participated ") or if they were just part of a dream.

Then there's the possibility of telepathically getting into someone else's mind, encoding a scenario into memory and assuming it's a past life experience. Perhaps multiple personality mechanisms play a part.

In the case of a child born after his grandmother died having a "memory" of one of her favorite sayings or some other characteristic could be a telepathic pickup from the mind of the child's mother.

Benefits of regression therapy might be similar to what's experienced in a confessional, unburdening of a traumatic memory to a sympathetic listener.
